Which Vehicle for Your Family Umrah Trip? Camry vs Staria vs Hiace vs GMC Yukon

Jeddah Airport to Makkah

A Camry seats four. It does not seat four with their suitcases, and I learned that at 1 am on the kerb outside Jeddah Airport with two sleeping children and a driver shaking his head.

Every transport company lists the same four cars with a seat count next to each. The seat count is never the problem. The boot is, and so is the step into the car for a grandmother, and the five hours to Madinah for a toddler. After five family Umrahs in all four vehicles, this is how I choose now, with the fixed fare for each so the decision has a price on it.

Camry, Staria, Hiace and GMC Yukon Compared

The right car is the smallest one that takes every bag and every passenger with a seat to spare. Count two checked bags per person, which is the airline allowance most pilgrims use in full on the way home. Seat counts below are real seats with that luggage loaded, not the number on the door.

Vehicle Passengers with bags Large suitcases Entry Jeddah Airport to Makkah Makkah to Madinah
Toyota Camry 3 2, plus hand luggage Low, normal car SAR 250 SAR 450
Hyundai Staria 6 6 to 7 Low floor, sliding door SAR 300 SAR 600
Toyota Hiace 9 10 or more High step, narrow door SAR 350 SAR 700
GMC Yukon 5 to 6 4 to 5 High step, wide door SAR 350 SAR 800

The fares are per car, with fuel and tolls included, from the fixed price list I book against. The Staria costs SAR 50 more than the Camry to Makkah and carries twice the family.

Toyota Camry for a Couple or a Parent and Child

A Camry is the right car for two adults, or two adults and a small child, with two large cases. Nothing bigger fits, whatever the driver says at the kerb.

It is the cheapest car on every route and the easiest to get into. On the Jeddah Airport to Makkah run it is the one I book when my wife and I travel without the children. Add a third suitcase or a pushchair and it stops being an option.

Hyundai Staria for a Family of Four to Six

The Staria is the family car for Umrah. Six passengers sit in three rows with a walkway between them. Six large cases go in the boot without touching the back seats. The sliding door and low floor mean a child climbs in alone and a grandparent steps in without a hand.

Two checked bags each puts a family of four at eight cases, one over the Staria. Children rarely fill their allowance, so a family with two children fits. Four adults at the full allowance do not. It also rides lowest and quietest of the four on the Madinah road, which matters more than any seat count when a toddler needs to sleep for five hours.

Toyota Hiace for Seven or More Pilgrims

Book a Hiace when the group passes six or the bags pass seven. It carries nine with ten or more cases, which makes it the only car for two families travelling together or a group with Zamzam boxes on the return.

The price for that space is the step. The floor is high, the door is narrow, and an elderly passenger needs an arm on each side. The rear seats also ride harder than a Staria over five hours, so put the youngest and oldest in the row behind the driver.

GMC Yukon for Comfort on the Makkah to Madinah Road

The Yukon is the car to book when comfort outranks capacity. Leather seats, the strongest air conditioning of the four, and a ride that makes the Makkah to Madinah drive feel shorter than the Staria does.

The trade is space. Five adults with four cases is the sensible load, because the third row and the boot compete for the same room, and the high step rules it out for anyone who cannot climb into an SUV unaided. For a family of four with adult children it is the best five hours money buys on that road, at SAR 200 more than the Staria.

Matching the Car to Your Family

Count bags before people, at two checked bags per adult, then check who has to climb in.

  • Two adults, two cases, no pushchair, Camry
  • Two adults with one to four children, or six passengers with up to seven bags, Staria
  • Anyone in a wheelchair or over seventy, Staria, for the low floor
  • Seven to nine passengers, or two families, Hiace
  • Four or five adults who want the smoothest ride to Madinah, GMC Yukon
  • Ten or more, two cars, or a Coaster on the routes where it is offered

The one rule that has never failed me is to book the next size up when the count sits at the limit. SAR 50 buys the spare row, and the spare row is where the children sleep.

Booking the Right Vehicle Before You Fly

Send four things. The number of adults, the number and ages of children, the number of large suitcases, and whether anyone needs the front seat. Then ask the company to name the vehicle in the confirmation. A message that says “car for six” is how a Camry turns up for six people.

Ask for a child car seat in the same message for any child under four. Saudi law requires one, most companies carry them only on request, and some charge SAR 20 to 50. A lightweight travel seat from home is the safer bet, and it works on the flight too.

The best Umrah taxi companies confirm the exact model, the driver’s name, the plate and the child seat the night before. The car that meets you is the car in the message. On my last three trips it was, and the 1 am kerbside scene has not happened since.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Coaster bus available for a group of ten or more?

Yes, on the main routes. A Coaster seats up to 16 with luggage underneath, and it is the only single vehicle for two or three families travelling together. Jeddah Airport to Makkah is about SAR 600 and Makkah to Madinah about SAR 1,150, which is under SAR 75 a head for a full bus.

Can I bring Zamzam water in the taxi to the airport?

Yes. A 5 litre Zamzam box fits behind the rear seats in a Staria, Hiace or Yukon, and one box per passenger is the airline limit for most carriers. In a Camry the boxes take the boot space of one suitcase, so a family of four with four cases and four boxes needs the Staria.

Do Umrah taxis have phone charging and Wi-Fi?

USB charging is standard in the Staria, Yukon and newer Camrys, and rare in the Hiace. Wi-Fi is not offered, so a Saudi SIM or eSIM covers navigation and calls. On the Madinah road, mobile data drops for short stretches near the halfway point and returns within minutes.

Can two families share a Hiace and split the fare?

Yes, and it is the cheapest way for eight or nine people to travel. A SAR 700 Hiace from Makkah to Madinah splits to about SAR 78 a head, less than a train seat. Book it under one name with one confirmation, and agree the pickup order between the two hotels before the driver arrives.

Can a Hiace drop me at the hotel door near the Haram?

Usually not. Roads in the central area close to large vehicles at prayer times and in Ramadan, so a Hiace stops at the nearest drop point and the hotel sends a buggy or you walk the last 200 to 400 metres. A Camry or Staria reaches most hotel doors outside those hours.
