What is the Usool-E-Deen (Principles of Shia Islam)? (Foundation of Faith of Shia Islam)

Understand the Meanings of Usool Deen

Usul or Usool: which means (root, foundation), the whole word “Usool-e-Deen” means (Principles) Roots of Islam. If the roots are strong, the tree will grow quickly and strongly and bear good fruit. On the contrary, if the roots are weak, the tree will neither grow strongly and well nor will it bear fruit. The importance of the Usool-e-Deen in Islam is the same: if our faith would be perfect on the Usool-e-Deen, then our worship would also be of great benefit. In contrast, if our faith is not perfect, then our worship is of no benefit. Understanding and learning the Principles of Islam (Usool Deen) is obligatory for every Muslim in the Shia sect. Learning the Usul-e-Deen and having complete faith in it is obligatory for every Muslim.

In simple words, no one can enter the circle of Islam without believing in the Asool-e-Deen (Principles of Islam).

How many are the Shia Usool-e-Deen (Principles of Ahle-Tashi Religion Islam)?

There are five Uso0l Deen (principles of Shia Islam):

  1. Tawheed (Monotheism)
  2. Adl (Justice)
  3. Nabuwat (Prophethood)
  4. Imamate (Leadership)
  5. Qayamat (The Day of Judgment)

The description of Usul-e-Deen is as follows:

  1. What is called Tawheed (Monotheism)?

Tawheed (Monotheism): The First Pillar of Deen Islam is Tawheed. That is, believing in Allah alone; our basic belief is that we believe in Allah alone in His essence and attributes. Allah has said in Surah Ikhlas:
“O Prophet, say that Allah is One, Allah is Independent, He is not begotten, nor is He begotten, nor is there any equal to Him.”
Therefore, we believe that Allah is one. If a person does not believe in one Allah or believes in more than one god, then such a person has nothing to do with Islam. That person is outside the scope of Islam. Therefore, Belief in One (1) Allah is obligatory upon every Muslim, called Tawheed (Monotheism).

  2. What is called Adl (Justice)?

Adl (Justice): The second basic pillar of the Usul-e-Deen is justice, which means that Allah does not oppress anyone. In Islam, Injustice is a defect or a big sin. We believe that Allah is free from all defects and shortcomings. Therefore, it is included in our faith that Allah is just. Therefore, every Muslim should also act with justice and fairness in worldly matters. Belief in justice is part of the faith of every Muslim.

  3. What is called Nabuwa (Prophecy)?

Nabuwat (Prophethood): The third pillar of Usool-e-Deen is prophethood. Prophethood comes from the word prophet, which means a messenger. Allah Almighty has sent one hundred and twenty-four thousand prophets to guide mankind, including messengers, i.e., those to whom the Book was revealed. Every person should believe in all the prophets and the final prophethood or messenger, i.e., Hazrat Muhammad S.A.W., as the last prophet and that no prophet will come after him, and in the heavenly books. If someone denies the prophethood of any prophet, then he is outside the scope of Islam; we cannot call him a Muslim. Therefore, it is necessary to have firm faith in all the prophets and messengers (to whom the heavenly Book was revealed), and it is part of the religion.

  4. What is Imamate (Leadership) called?

Imamate (Leadership): The fourth pillar of the Useel-e-Deen is Imamate. We call those whom Allah’s last prophet, Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ, appointed as his successor and leader of the nation Imams. Because guidance is the responsibility of Allah Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) was the last prophet of Allah, and no prophet was to come after him. Therefore, the Imamate line began; the Imamate chain consisted of 12 Imams. The first was Imam Hazrat Ali (A.S.), and the last current Alive Imam is Imam Mehdi (A.S.). The last Imam Hazrat Muhammad Mahdi (A.S.), who is still alive and is in the veil of absence by the command of Allah, will come when this world is filled with injustice, and he will come and fill this world with justice. As a Muslim, every person must have firm faith in the first Imam Hazrat Ali (A.S.) to the last Imam Hazrat Muhammad Mahdi (A.S.) since belief in Imamate is part of the religion of Islam.

  5. What is the Day of Qayamat (Judgment)?

Qayamat (Day of Judgment): The last pillar of the principles of religion is the Day of Judgment. The Day of Judgment means the Day of Accountability and Book. Allah has sent humans to this world to worship Him and has shown them two paths: one is the path of Allah, and the other is that of Satan. Now it is up to man to decide which path he chooses. If they choose the path of Allah, then Allah will send them to Paradise as a reward on the Day of Judgment. But if he chooses the path of Satan, then Allah will send him to Hell as a punishment, in which he will remain forever. Therefore, belief in the Day of Judgment is part of the faith of every Muslim, and every Muslim should have firm faith in it.

There are 5 Basic Pillars, as we mention above (Usool-e-Deen) in Shia Islam that must be believed in. If anyone speaks against the Usool Deen, then he is definitely outside the circle of Islam. Therefore, according to Fiqa Jafria, following the Mujtahids is also possible only as long as they are believers in the principles of religion.
